ONU's McAfee, Staranchuk, SXU's Oviedo Gain Men's Volleyball Weekly Acclaim

CHICAGO --- Leading their respective teams to a pair of wins during the seven-day period ending March 17, Olivet Nazarene University's Brody McAfee (Westfield, Ind.) and Sterling Staranchuk (Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada) and Saint Xavier University's Christian Oviedo (Brea, Calif.) have been named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Volleyball Players of the Week.  The league made the announcement on Tuesday.

McAfee gained his second straight and third overall CCAC Attacker of the Week award after producing double-figure kill counts in each of his three matches.  He finished the week averaging 3.60 kills per set with a .316 attack percentage, while also recording eight blocks.

What set the freshman opposite-side hitter apart from the other nominees were his 11 kills and three block assists in a 3-0 win over conference foe St. Ambrose University last Tuesday.  His best match of the week came on Saturday when he averaged 3.75 kills per set, attacked at a .387 clip and totaled three blocks in a four-set decision over Siena Heights University (Mich.).

Staranchuk's 1.2 blocks-per-set average netted him CCAC Defender of the Week accord.  He totaled 12 blocks over the three matches covering ten sets with the highlight being his eight blocks versus St. Ambrose.

The senior middle blocker also attacked at a .423 clip, while averaging 1.4 kills pe set for the week.

Olivet Nazarene's 2-1 week put the Tigers at 9-8 overall and 4-1 in league affairs.

Oviedo was named the CCAC Setter of the Week after leading Saint Xavier to a pair of wins, including a four-set victory opposite NAIA No. 15-ranked Indiana Tech.  The senior put up 31 assists in a straight-set victory against Calumet College of St. Joseph last Tuesday and followed that performance up with a 39-assist night on Friday against Indiana Tech.

For the two matches combined, Oviedo averaged an even 10.0 assists per set on offense and 1.0 digs defensively.

The No. 11-ranked Cougars are 9-8 overall and a perfect 4-0 in league matches.
