Judson Upset Headlines Men's Soccer Tournament First Round

CHICAGO --- No. 7 seeded Judson University pulled off the shocker of the opening round of the 2023 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament on Saturday when it upset Governors State University 2-1.  GSU had come into the matchup as the hottest team in the tournament, winning seven games in a row and being unbeaten in nine straight contests.

The rest of the opening round saw top-seeded Olivet Nazarene University and No. 3 seed Roosevelt University claim one-goal victories and No. 4 Trinity Christian College handle Saint Xavier University 3-0.

That sets up Wednesday's semifinal-round schedule with Olivet Nazarene (11-3-2) hosting Trinity Christian (9-6-3) and Judson (8-8-2) seeking its second straight upset at Roosevelt (10-6-1).

The two winners advance to Saturday's title match.

Recapping Saturday:

Olivet Nazarene 2, Viterbo 1
Kurodo Ihara provided both goals for Olivet Nazarene, including the game-winner in the 63rd minute.  His first goal came at 20:09.  Viterbo was thinking upset after Joaquin Eichhorn's game-tying goal just 53 seconds into the second half.

Judson 2, Governors State 1
Judson wasted little time in regaining the lead after Governor State's Raul Garcia tied the contest at one-all in the 51st minute.  Martin Wainstein provided the game-winner two minutes later.  Inigo Capellan accounted for the Eagles' other tally at 17:44.

Roosevelt 1, St. Francis 0
Oskar Schuster's goal at 87:48 finally broke the scoreless deadlock and advanced the Lakers to the semifinal round.  Eric Carvajal notched his fifth shutout in goal, registering three saves in the process.

Trinity Christian 3, Saint Xavier 0
Ismael Aguero provided two of Trinity Christian's three goals, including the only one that mattered at 3:55.  Giorgos Christodoulou recorded his fifth clean sheet of the season courtesy of his four saves.
