SXU's Johnson Captures Men's Basketball Honor In Big Week of Wins

CHICAGO --- Saint Xavier University's Cedric Johnson (Bellevue, Neb.) came up big for the Cougars in a busy three-game week of wins during the seven-day period ending Jan. 21 to claim his fourth Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week award, the league office announced late Tuesday afternoon.

Over the course of the three league victories, Johnson averaged 28.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists, while shooting 48.2 percent from the field (27-of-56) and 81.8 percent at the free-throw line (27-of-33). 

The senior guard capped off the week by scoring both the tying basket and the winning free throw in a 76-75 upset victory over NAIA No. 22-ranked Olivet Nazarene University on Saturday.  In that game, Johnson totaled 26 points, seven rebounds and two assists.

He also hit the 26-point mark versus University of St. Francis on Wednesday, where the Cougars collected a 77-75 win and Johnson authored a double-double.  Besides the 26 points, he produced ten rebounds and three assists.

Johnson opened the week last Monday with a 33-point barrage and eight boards in an 80-79 decision over Calumet College of St. Joseph.      

Johnson's name remains all over the CCAC leaderboard highlighted by his league-best 24.2 points per game.  He is also third in rebounding (7.6 rpg), fourth in both field goal (.534) and free-throw shooting (.835), sixth in three-point accuracy (.431) and eighth in total assists (58).

Saint Xavier has won its last four games in a row and is now 12-6 overall and 7-3 in conference matchups.
