IUSB's Pohl, SAU's Marchizza Earn First Weekly Baseball Honors For 2024

CHICAGO --- A .500 batting average from Indiana University South Bend's Anthony Pohl (Westphalia, Mich.) and a win on the mound over a ranked foe by St. Ambrose University's Sergio Marchizza (Chatham, Ill.) during the seven-day period ending Feb. 25 has earned the pair Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week accord, respectively, the league office announced on Tuesday.

Pohl hit safely and drove in at least one run in all five games in which he appeared last week, going 11-for-22 with three doubles, a home run, 11 RBIs and three runs scored.  The junior drove in a pair of runs in each of his first four contests before closing out the week with a three-RBI game in a 6-4 loss to Indiana University Purdue University Columbus on Saturday.

Pohl also had four multi-hit games highlighted by his 4-for-5 effort in a 14-7 win over IUPUC on Friday.

The Titans went 3-2 on the week to improve to 4-5 overall.

Marchizza did not allow an earned run over two appearances covering 9 2/3 innings.  In a start last Monday, he went the first five innings, allowing three hits and one walk against four strikeouts.  The only run he allowed in the 2-1 win over Mounty Marty University (S. Dak.) was unearned.

Four days later, the junior earned the victory in a 5-4 upset of NAIA No. 14 Indiana Wesleyan University.  In that game, he struck out six batters, while allowing just one hit in 4 2/3 innings of relief.

For the two games combined, Marchizza permitted just four hits in the 9 2/3 innings with ten strikeouts and only one walk.

St. Ambrose's 3-1 week put the Fighing Bees at 3-3 overall.
