Champions of Character Year in Review - Governors State

UNIVERSITY PARK, IL — The Governors State Athletics Department took part in three community service events this past school year which afforded the opportunity to discuss NAIA Champion of Character initiatives.

As part of an ACT preparatory program, GSU Basketball team members visited Rich East High School in Park Forest on April 8, and in front of a school assembly, discussed the NAIA's Five Core Values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.

On November 21, GSU participated at Level Up - Sister to Sister Part II, a female youth summit held at Hillcrest High School. Addressing topics such as college and career readiness, conflict resolution and healthy living, teens had a chance to hear from GSU Assistant Athletic Director and Head Women's Basketball Coach Tonishea Mack, who addressed the NAIA's Five Core values.

Coach Mack also spoke as a panelist at the Level Up youth empowerment summit conducted September 22 at Rich East High School. The summit was designed to challenge young people to level up in their faith, academics and personal goals.

In addition, GSU student-athletes showed their commitment to servant leadership on November 5, stopping by the Feed My Starving Children processing center in Schaumburg to help prepare specifically-formulated food packets. A total of 34 student-athletes, coaches and athletic department staffers took part in the event.
