GSU's Chevre, Washington Double Up For Second Time In Claiming Women's Basketball Weekly Honors
CHICAGO --- For the second time this season, Governors State University's Zareia Chevre (St. Paul, Minn.) and Da'Naria Washington (Indianapolis, Ind.) shared the spotlight when the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference announced its final regular-season Women's Basketball Players of the Week on Tuesday morning. The players were also honored at the same time during the week ending Dec. 29.
Washington was recognized for the fourth time on the defensive side of the ball, where she netted five rebounds (eight total), three steals, three blocks, four assists and 18 points last week. She was particularly clutch last Wednesday in a 96-70 victory over Indiana University Northwest. In that game, she totaled three steals, one block, five rebounds, three assists and ten points. She also held Jessica Carrothers, the nation's leading scorer, better than eight points below her season average.
The senior guard collected another two steals, three rebounds, one assist and eight points in a 65-56 victory over Holy Cross College on Saturday.
Chevre was just as key a performer in capturing her third CCAC Offensive Player of the Week award. She averaged 30.5 points per game on a near-perfect 23-for-28 shooting mark from the field (.821). She also went 5-for-8 from three-point range and 10-of-11 on free throws. Her other averages included 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.0 blocks in the two games.
The senior forward delivered her second 40-point effort of the season in the crucial victory over Indiana Northwest, where she went 16-of-18 from the field and 4-of-5 behind the arc. She was also credited with four rebounds, three steals and one block.
Chevre turned in another 21 points on 70 percent shooting (7-of-10) Saturday and just missed a double-double with her nine rebounds. She also recorded two steals and one block.
The two wins enabled Governors State to win the regular-season league title outright at 17-3. Overall, the Jaguars are 23-3.
